Dear World,

This is an invitation to help build a movement—
to take one day and use it to stop the climate crisis.

We are a group of people from around the planet—young and old, scientists and writers and activists—who have one thing in common. We know the most important number on earth: 350. And we know how to use that number to finally get global action on the worst crisis humans have ever faced.

But we can only do it if you help.

350 in Turkey! 350 Türkiye’de

Istanbul 350Click here to read this post in Turkish.  Bu yazıyı Türkçe okumak için buraya tıklayınız.

It was only five months ago that Turkey ratified the Kyoto treaty, a first step in joining the international community in the effort to address climate change. They joined the treaty in large part thanks to the hard work of some remarkable grassroots groups there, like our friends at the Küresel Eylem Grubu (KEG), or Global Action Group in English. KEG is a remarkable team of activists -- NGOs and individuals alike -- based in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir.  The photo to the right is at a KEG rally held in Istanbul this past April, calling for Turkey to take a more bold, active part in the international effort to combat climate change.

A few of leaders of the group, Omer Madra and Goksen Sahin helped to host Bill McKibben in Istanbul on Wednesday.  In addition to meeting with activists and community groups there, he spoke on Acik Radio with Omer Madra, Yasam Radio, and NTV with Goksen (one of the most viewed news channels in Turkey).  A HUGE thanks to Goksen, Omer Madra, and all in KEG who made yesterday's Istanbul events happen and for carrying on the 350 movement in Turkey!

For anyone in Turkey new to 350, or if you're elsewhere and want to introduce friends in Turkey to 350, you can share this blog post and the October 24 action invitation letter with them in both English and TurkishClick here for the Turkish versions.

While Bill, Omer, Goksen, and the whole team in Istanbul were building the 350 momentum there, I had the great pleasure of meeting KEG leaders in Izmir, who are also formulating their October 24 action plans.  It is tremendously inspiring to hear of the movement efforts being made there and across Turkey and to connect and unite our efforts around 350.  And the reason why I was in Izmir at all, is that nearby, along the Agean coast, I am joining 80 youth from over 30 countries gathered together for a Climate Advocacy Institute.  We are training, sharing skills, and planning campaigns and actions for 24th of October -- and generally using this rare opportunity of coming together face to face from around the world to strengthen and unite the movement.  Stay tuned for more updates from the Institute here in the coming weeks as well.

Calling all Artists!

You may have noticed a new button on our website recently called "people" - this indicates different groups of people that are really taking the lead to spread the 350 number in their networks.  Few other groups are really taking off like artists - if you hadn't yet noticed, 350.org is a highly visually-oriented campaign.  The simple, 3-digit number that translates across borders lends itself well to artistic interpretation - just check out the beginnings of the 350.org Art Gallery to see what artists have contributed so far.  And think about contributing yourself!

But don't just keep the artistic expression on the internet - think about how you can incorporate art into your action for October 24th (or leading up to your event) to get people thinking, and to inspire further action.  Already we're hearing about all kinds of interesting actions that are utilizing various forms of art to get the message out.  In Bogota, Colombia, youth activists are utilizing street theatre to get people thinking, by holding mock debates about Copenhagen on the public buses.  In San Francisco, October 24th participants will also ride public transit, known as BART, carrying hand-painted banners for their action - in other words, "Art on the BART".  From New York City to Mongolia, people are creating giant canvass cubes to paint on, that represent the volume of CO2 in one gallon of gasoline.  Throughout the world, organizers are planning aerial art - forming words and images with their bodies to send a message to the media, and to the world.

There are a million ways to take this number, and this issue that faces our planet, and to make it real to people through artistic expression - think about what makes sense in your community and what might get people thinking differently. Let your creativity run wild!  And let us know what you come up with.

Dear Friends,

350.org started with one simple question:

How can a people powered movement unite around a common call to action, and help pull the planet back from the brink of the climate crisis?

Now, with less than four months to go before the International Day of Climate Action in October, you can start to see the answer.  Every day I open the 350.org e-mail inbox to find inspiring stories from around the world-stories too good to keep to myself.

So today, we're switching our style to bring you dispatches from the field in the first ever 350 Newsletter.  The updates are short and sweet, and there's a bunch of 'em-here's what's in this issue:

--------------------------

1. UN Update: 350 in the Treaty! (and The World's Biggest Exclamation Mark) »

2. The new video - it's everywhere (and it's translated)! »

3. A climate movement built by athletes (and musicians, farmers, artists, people of faith, and ???) »

4. The Twitter wave - build the buzz and build our website »

5. 350 Grows: scaling up a global network »

6. Dispatch from the USA: We need more! »

Europe

A gift from Stockholm

A gift from Stockholm

I'm sitting down in the office for the first time in about five weeks.  It's been a wild ride - Bill McKibben and I have been on the road talking to people all around Europe about 350 and our big October day.  So much to tell, but what's on my mind right now is the meeting we had right before wrapping up the tour - perhaps because this button Anne gave me was still pinned to my shirt when I got home.

Anne is part of the growing and vibrant civil society in Stockholm, Sweden pushing for a clean energy future.  She's involved in what sounds like has been a long fight opposing a new highway bypass, and during the meeting she came up with the brilliant idea of doing 350 geocaches in the nature reserves and World Heritage (Drottningholm) the campaign is hoping to protect.  For those of you all who are new to geocaching, think orienteering -maps and compasses in the woods- updated for the 21st century with GPS.  Very cool.

Our small meeting held a lot of promise, with people from Miljöförbundet Jordens Vänner (Friends of the Earth Sweden) and KlimatAktion, a powerful, new Swedish climate coalition, talking about how to use the October 24 date to promote their projects in Stockholm and leverage their energy towards the Copenhagen UN meeting.  Fun in the woods, with a local targeted message for better transportation options, linked with thousands of events around the world with an global demand of 350 on October 24 adding to the action in and around Stockholm.  What could be better?

I'll hope to send out some more tidbits from our recent discussions - everywhere we went, people were ready to organize - a bike messenger relay carrying the news of 350, giant "3"s, "5"s, and "0"s connecting city to city in international cooperation, maybe even 350 beer steins in southern Germany...  but, then again, maybe not.  It was fun to laugh about it with our new friends at Green City Munich though.

Onwards!

News from 350 México and our partner GEO Juvenil México

Here's a little update from 350 field organizers in Mexico, who just participated in an exciting national youth conference that brought together youth leaders from throughout the country.  For more about what's happening in Mexico and the rest of the Spanish-speaking world, visit the 350.org blog en español: www.350.org/es

From June 25th through 27th, 350 México participated in the 3rd National Forum of GEO Juvenil Mexico, a national youth environmental organization in Mexico, in Manzanillo, Colima.  Representatives from 350 Mexico gave a special presentation to more than 45 youth leaders assembled from 16 different states throughout Mexico, all of whom were very enthusiastic and comitted to bringing the 350 message back to their states and organizing events for the October 24th day of climate action.  We're sure that we'll see many exciting and creative events resulting from this alliance!  Many thanks to GEO Juvenil México for their invitation, and commitment! - 350 México
